Tips and Tricks for CAT

Hi Friends,

Here I will be posting some essential things to know which will help you in thoroughly preparing for CAT.

Right now I am presenting the various 'Tones' of Reading Comprehension.

Here is the list of most of the tones in which any RC passage can be classified:

Possible tone --- Meaning of the word

  1. Acerbic Harsh/ severe; bitter
  2. Aggressive Forceful; tending towards unprovoked offensiveness
  3. Angry/indignant
  4. Apathetic Emotionless; not interested/ concerned; indifferent; unresponsive
  5. Apologetic Expressing remorse, regret, sorrow for having failed, injured, insulted or wronged another
  6. Belligerent Aggressively hostile; bellicose
  7. Biased Favouring one thing/person/group over another for personal reasons.
  8. Caustic Biting; acerbic
  9. Commiserating Feeling/ expressing sorrow for; empathizing with; pity
  10. Condescending Patronizing; showing/implying patronising descent from dignity/ superiority
  11. Contemptuous Expressing contempt/ disdain
  12. Cynical Displaying a belief that people are always self-seeking and never altruistic in their actions
  13. Derisive Unkind and displaying contempt
  14. Disparaging Speak slightingly; depreciating; belittling
  15. Dogmatic Asserting opinions in an arrogant manner; imperious; dictatorial
  16. Emotional Easily affected by feelings actuated by experiencing love, hate, fear and the like
  17. Ethical Dealing with principles of morality; honest; righteous
  18. Euphemistic Substitution of mild, indirect or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh or blunt
  19. Grandiose More complicated/ elaborated than necessary; pompous
  20. Humanistic Evincing keen interest in human affairs, nature, welfare, values
  21. Humourous Funny and amusing
  22. Introspective Consider one's own internal state of feelings
  23. Incendiary Causing strong feelings
  24. Laudatory Praising; extolling; applauding
  25. Motivating Impelling; inciting
  26. Obsequious Fawning; showing servile complaisance; flattering; deferent
  27. Pedestrian Lacking vitality, imagination, distinction
  28. Populist Egalitarian; pertaining to the characteristics of common people/ working class
  29. Provocative Inciting; stimulating; irritating; vexing
  30. Romantic Fanciful; impractical; unrealistic; extravagant; exaggerated
  31. Sarcastic Harsh, bitter derision; taunting; sneering; cutting remarks
  32. Satirical Ironical; taunting; human folly held up to scorn/ derision/ ridicule
  33. Speculative Theoretical rather than practical; thoughtful; reflective; hypothetical
  34. Technical Using terminology or treating subject matter in a manner peculiar to a particular field, as a writer or a book
  35. Vitriolic Full of anger and hatred
  36. Vituperative Cruel and angry criticism
